MEET THE ADOPTABLE ANIMALS

At Shy Wolf Sanctuary, our mission is to provide a safe and compassionate home for wolves, wolfdogs, and other exotic animals that cannot survive on their own. While many of the animals who come to us will live out their lives here in sanctuary due to behavioral, medical, or legal limitations, some wolfdogs have the temperament and needs that make them suitable for placement in the right experienced home.

Our Adoptable Animals page features wolfdogs that may be eligible for adoption. These animals have been carefully evaluated by our team and are looking for knowledgeable, responsible homes that understand the unique needs of wolfdogs. Adoption allows these animals the opportunity to thrive in a dedicated home environment while also helping our sanctuary create space for additional rescues, especially those who have nowhere else to go and require lifetime sanctuary care.

Because wolfdogs are not typical domestic pets, we place a strong emphasis on education, proper containment, and experienced ownership. Every potential adopter is thoroughly reviewed to ensure the best possible match for both the animal and the adopter.

On this page you will also find links to our Adoption Application and Foster Application. Fostering can be a wonderful way to help a wolfdog transition toward a permanent home while supporting the sanctuary’s lifesaving work.

By adopting or fostering from Shy Wolf Sanctuary, you are not only giving an animal a second chance—you are also helping us continue our mission to rescue, and protect wolves and wolfdogs in need.

Please Read the Following Carefully before filling out an Application

At Shy Wolf Sanctuary, our top priority is ensuring every wolfdog is placed in a home where they can truly thrive. Wolfdogs are not typical pets; they require specialized care, understanding, and commitment.

Please review the requirements below carefully before submitting an adoption application.

Experience & Understanding

Wolfdogs are complex, intelligent animals with both domestic and wild instincts.

Ideal adopters will have:

Experience with northern breeds, primitive breeds, or wolfdogs

A strong understanding of:

· Prey drive

· Escape behaviors

· Pack mentality

· A willingness to continue learning and follow guidance from our team

Secure Containment Requirements

Proper containment is non-negotiable for the safety of both the animal and the community.

Required:

· 6–8+ foot fencing (height may vary depending on content level)

· Secure gates (double-gated entry preferred)

Please note:

Apartments, townhomes, and HOA-restricted properties are typically not suitable.

Yard inspections may be required prior to approval.

Lifestyle & Daily Commitment

Wolfdogs require significantly more time and engagement than a typical dog.

Adopters must be prepared to provide:

· Daily physical exercise

· Consistent mental enrichment

· Structure, patience, and routine

Important considerations:

Wolfdogs may not be fully trainable in the same way as domestic dogs. Without proper stimulation, they can become destructive or attempt to escape.

Household Compatibility

Every home environment is carefully evaluated. Small animals (cats, rabbits, etc.) are typically not safe due to prey drive

Other dogs must be:

· Properly introduced

· Compatible in temperament and energy level

· Homes with children will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis

· Older children are generally preferred

Veterinary Care

Not all veterinarians are willing or experienced in treating wolfdogs.

Adopters must:

Identify a qualified veterinarian prior to adoption

Commit to:

· Routine vaccinations

· Preventative care

· Emergency medical needs

Adoption Process

Our process is designed to ensure the best possible match.

Steps include:

· Submission of an adoption application

· Review and screening by our team

· Reference checks

· Home inspection (virtual or in-person)

· Educational discussion/interview

· Signed adoption contract

Financial Responsibility

Wolfdogs require a higher level of financial commitment than most pets.

Costs may include:

· Adoption donation

· High-quality diet (often specialized or raw feeding)

· Enclosure construction and maintenance

· Routine and emergency veterinary care

Lifelong Commitment

Wolfdogs are a 10–15+ year commitment.

All adoptions require: A signed agreement that the animal will be returned to Shy Wolf Sanctuary if you are no longer able to care for them

No private rehoming under any circumstances

Is a Wolfdog Right for You?

They are not for everyone.

They may:

Be shy or aloof with strangers Not enjoy public outings or busy environments Require ongoing behavioral understanding and management

They are not domesticated dogs; they are a unique blend of wild and domestic traits that require respect, patience, and dedication.
