2023 UPDATE: Markey will remain at Shy Wolf Sanctuary as a permanent rescue. We have decided that it is in his best interest to stay with us, rather than to be uprooted again. He’s got his favorite volunteers and enjoys getting lots of attention all to himself.
Markey was estimated to be 5-6 years old in February 2021 when rescued. He’s a very sweet boy that will need a special home or placement, as he’s still adjusting to coming inside. Currently, Markey is fostered and starting to venture inside the house but is very nervous with this environment. As you can see from the photo, Markey spent his whole life outside in all kinds of weather. He has a very unique nose due to losing his septum fence fighting with another singing dog. Markey would need to meet any potential companions.
He was living with an older female New Guinea Singing Dog. Markey doesn’t seem to know how to play as a result of being with a much older companion. While fostered he has been introduced to an older domestic dog and basically had no reaction to her. Daisy even tried to get Markey to play with her and he seemed confused.
It would be nice to pair Markey up with another dog, singing or domestic, who would give him the companionship and support he needs. He will either need to be an outside dog or live with someone with a securely fenced yard and, preferably, the ability to be indoor/outdoor. Markey can walk on leash and does quite well, but is still nervous in new situations. We hope that he will grow to trust and love someone enough to blossom and begin to explore the larger world. Are you the person for Markey? Email us at HERE to get an adoption application and more information.
The animals have been quarantined upon arrival at the sanctuary until all veterinary care can be arranged. Shy Wolf has reached out to contacts through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to see if any of these animals can find placement as ambassadors. Florida allows individuals to have a New Guinea Singing Dogs as a pet with a Class III wildlife permit.
