Ginger is a wolfdog that came to us at about four to five months old, in late August of 2020. She was living in a home with someone that had multiple pets, from cats to other dogs, to reptiles. The person had made an appointment to get Ginger spayed, and upon check in at the clinic, the owner stated that Ginger had also been vomiting and was sensitive to the touch on her belly. Radiographs were taken and showed a dog toy in Ginger’s stomach - her spay surgery turned into an emergency foreign body surgery. The surgery was a success, and it was decided that Ginger was too much for her previous owner to handle, so she became a sanctuary resident.
We had hoped that since she was so young, that she could be monitored and house trained, and could live in a home. After a few weeks of recovering from surgery, and living with one of our staff with constant supervision, it was decided that Ginger needed to be a sanctuary animal due to her habit of wanting to eat anything in sight. There would be no way to entirely “Ginger Proof” a home.
Ginger has found her packmate at the sanctuary, another rescued wolfdog named Haku! Ginger has grown up with Haku, as they formed a quick strong bond when she was only six or seven months old. They love zooming around their enclosure together, and wrestling each other. Ginger is very energetic, and we believe that Haku is the only animal that has the patience to put up with her shenanigans. She also involves her favorite humans in play, oftentimes swatting at people with her paw to get attention and love. When Ginger isn’t playing with Haku or running around, we often find her sunbathing on top of her house. She loves food enrichment, playing with palm fronds, and her favorite person is long time volunteer, Liz!
