Wolfdog

In September of 2021, we were contacted about the need for an emergency rescue of two wolfdogs in Northwestern Florida.  Their property was under water and had been for a while.  The enclosure for the animals was uninabitable and the owners were trying to make it work by keeping them crated indoors.  Neither of the young wolfdogs was doing well in that situation.  The owners also had multiple other dogs of a variety of breeds, complicating the situation even further.

We put the information out and were contacted by a former volunteer offering to foster the pair.  She said if they could live indoors, she would foster them and get them ready for adoption.  With that plan in place, she and another senior volunteer drove up to complete the rescue.  they had to park far away from the house and the property, as you can see, was still very flooded with even vehicles under water.

It was immediately obvious, however, that these two animals were not going to be “pet quality” indoor animals, due to the fact that the owners could barely walk them on leash and struggled to get them loaded into the crates for transport.  The volunteers called our Executive Director to discuss the situation and an alternate plan was developed.

The sanctuary stays full and can only take animals in that will get along with existing packs or when a resident passes.  Chenoa and Kye stayed in foster for several months, receiving necessary medical care that included vaccines, spay, and neuter.  During that time we worked on some leash and handling skills to make their transition easier.  It was still very challenging to get Kye to allow a leash, telling us that he was a sanctuary animal, and not a pet for a normal home.

After one of our senior residents passed, we were able to shift animals around and move this great pair to the sanctuary permanently.  Once in a quiet larger enclosure, Kye flourished and actually became the more outgoing of the pair to new visitors.  Chenoa has her favorite people and is very demanding about attention from them, to the point where she pushes Kye out of the way demanding that SHE be the center of your loving.  Kye is very regal in appearance and presence while Chenoa is very outgoing and adoring.  We look forward to many years with this amazing pair bringing joy to volunteers and visitors alike.
